FAQ
What does DIVA stand for?

DIVA stand for differentiate infected from vaccinated animals. This is accomplished by having only a portion (subunit) of the pathogen vaccine. If antibodies to other parts of the pathogen not included in the vaccine are detected the animal has been infected with the pathogen. If only antibodies to the vaccine subunit are detected the animal has not been infected. For a vaccine to enable DIVA is important in control and eradication strategies.

What is Hemagglutinin (HA)?

Hemagglutinin (HA) is a protein found in the influenza virus that causes agglutination of red blood cells. HA is an antigen that induces antibodies that protect against influenza.

What is PRRSV?

PRRSV stands for Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus. This is an RNA virus and the pathogen that causes PRRS in pigs.

What is SIV?

SIV stands for Swine Influenza Virus. This is an RNA virus and the pathogen which causes clinical flu in pigs.

What is a strain?

The term "strain" refers to different organisms within a single species of a pathogen which differ based on genetic material or cross-reacting immunity.

What is a subunit?

A subunit is a portion of a pathogen such as a single protein or part of a protein.

What is a vaccine?

A vaccine is a substance administered to an animal for prevention, amelioration, or treatment of infectious diseases.

What is a vector?

A vector is an organism which serves to transfer recombinant genetic material from a pathogen to cells either in a laboratory or directly to the animal.

What is Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (VEE)?

VEE is an Alphavirus that is the source of the AlphaVax technology. TC-83 is an attenuated vaccine strain that is not considered a select agent.

What are vero cells?

Vero cells are a single cell type that can be grown in the lab and used to produce RS or RP vaccines for any desired pathogen.

What is a conditional license?

A conditional license is given when there is an immediate need for a product that has been shown to be pure, safe, and demonstrates a reasonable expectation of efficacy. Conditional licenses are generally issued with restrictions and for a limited period of time. As the end of the conditional license period, data collected in support of the product's efficacy, potency, and product performance is evaluated to determine if the conditional license should be renewed or if a regular product license may be issued.
